The political turmoil in Rivers State escalated on Thursday as the State House of Assembly initiated impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Oduh.
The process was triggered during a plenary session led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, where the Majority Leader, Major Jack, formally presented a notice accusing the governor of gross misconduct. According to the Assembly, at least 26 lawmakers endorsed the notice, which they insist complies with relevant provisions of the Nigerian Constitution.
Speaker Amaewhule announced that Governor Fubara would be formally served the notice within seven days, in line with established legislative procedures.
In a related move, the Deputy Majority Leader, Linda Stewart, also read a separate notice detailing allegations of gross misconduct against Deputy Governor Ngozi Oduh, signaling that impeachment steps against both officials would run concurrently.
The development is the latest chapter in the prolonged political standoff between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, former Rivers State governor and current political , Nyesom Wike. The rift has continued to deepen divisions within the state’s political landscape.
Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress (APC) weighed in on the unfolding situation, stating that Wike would be politically subordinate to Governor Fubara should the governor choose to defect to the party. The APC maintained that party hierarchy is determined by current political office.
The party’s Director of Information, Bala Ibrahim, made the remarks during an interview aired on Trust TV and monitored by Plateau Radio Television Corporation
