 Plateau state is one of the thirty-six states in the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Its name is derived from the geographical landscape and the cool climatic conditions that prevail. The people are friendly and hospitable and that explains why the State has come to be known as “The Home of Peace and Tourism”.

General Yakubu Gowon created Plateau State from Benue-Plateau State in 1967 and on 1st October, 1966, Nasarawa State was further carved out of the State during the military regime of Late General Sani Abacha. Plateau State presently has 17 Local Government Area with Jos as the State Capital. The State is well connected by a network of good roads, railways and a domestic airport located at Heipang in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area.

The Plateau highlighted have an average height of 400 meters above sea level with the highest point rising to 1829 meters above sea level at Shere Hills.

Plateau State covers an area of about 26,899 square kilometers with a projected population of 3.6 million. Located in what is geographically called the Middle Belt or North-Central Zone, the State lies between latitude 80 degrees 24” North and longitude 80 degrees 32” and 100 degrees 38” East with an average rainfall of over 146 centiliters. The State shares borders with Bauchi State, Kano State, and Kaduna State in the Northeast and Taraba State and Nasarawa State in the East.

Some notable tourist attractions found in Plateau State are Shere Hills, Assop Falls, Kurra Falls [which is to be developed into an international Tourism Centre], Kerang Volcanic Mountains, Wase Rock [which is a well-known breeding ground for the White Pelican bird in Africa]. Pandam Game Reserve and Lake, Jos Zoological Gardens.
